Hi from Velika Gorica!

The town in the suburb of Croatia‘s capital is the official home to the country’s busiest airport, Zagreb Airport. This normally means only one thing: I’m leaving Croatia again.

I’m not a deserter, nor do I have bad feelings towards places I leave behind. On the contrary, abandoned places are among my most exciting points of interest!

I don’t know what kind of traveler you are, but if we share this exploratory trait, you’ll never see a non-trending location as a waste of your time. Exactly the opposite – deserted attractions of the days gone by have this very special appeal you cannot find in the buzzing spotlights of international tourism.

From abandoned hotels (for instance, Hotel Belvedere in Croatia) to fun factories of yesterday (let’s say, the demolished Nara Dreamland in Japan), places don’t stop “living” when people depart. Nature takes over them, and they can almost feel more alive, with echoes of the past whispering in shadows.

I felt the same when I wandered around Kato Chora, a castle near Mylopotamos on the island of Kythira in Greece. This medieval village, built by the Venetians in 1566, was completely abandoned in the 1950s, leaving behind old houses and the remains of nine churches.

With Kato Chora’s skeleton still rather preserved, this ghost town is an exciting place to visit on Kythira Island. No big signposts explain this piece of history; the setting leaves you to fill in the blanks on your own, imagining how life could have been there in the centuries that passed.

You can get the feeling of Kato Chora castle in real time via the newest Pipeaway Walks video. Join the walk, and check it out!

Have an explorative week,

Ivan Kralj
