Hi from Istria!

This is one of my favorite Croatian regions for tourism. When I got my first car in my 20s, this was my ideal destination for summer road trips.

I still hold fond memories set afloat in the clear waters of its rugged coastline, the waterfalls of Kotle or Zarečki Krov, the rocky towers and Hollywood-western canyons of Učka Mountain, historic settlements ranging from Pula, with its majestic forts and amphitheater, to Hum, the smallest town in the world, and exciting cultural events such as the hill-perched Motovun Film Festival or the Dance and Non-Verbal Festival in the Renaissance castle of Svetvinčenat.

The attraction of this wealthy Croatian region that inspired everyone from Jules Verne to Baby Lasagna did not escape the producers of ARD‘s TV show “Wunderschön”, featuring my current home, from the wild edges of Kamenjak to Tito‘s safari park in Brijuni and the romantic sights of Rovinj.

You can watch the entire 90-minute documentary on YouTube.

One of the nicer ways to see Istria is also by sailing along its shores. Waking up in a new cove every day can truly be mesmerizing. But where you relieve yourself does matter.

In Novigrad, where I currently reside, one such sailing couple anchored in the harbor and used a small inflatable boat to reach the town’s beach. I noticed them mainly because they had two cute Border Collies squeezed in with them on a tiny dinghy they rowed.

As soon as they reached the coast, the town’s official swimming area, the dogs left their mark with scattered puddles and turdles.

It’s true: Istrian nature calls, and sometimes it’s a siren call. But if you come to explore it, be mindful of everyone else trying to do just the same. Leave no trace behind.

Have a respectful week,

Ivan Kralj
