Hi from Biokovo!

I’m actually still looking at the highest mountain of Dalmatia from down below, just like the 60,000 tourists that currently call Makarska Riviera home.

Many of these will certainly be tempted to climb the mountain range towering above some of Croatia‘s nicest beaches. Down here, where the air fries us at 39˚C, and even the sea offers just a temporary refreshment at 24˚C, tourists can be tempted to escape to the higher grounds of Biokovo.

The other day, a guest in the hotel where I currently work left a brand new, unpacked pair of flip-flops as a tip for my service. I immediately thought of all those people who had a crazy idea that their beachwear would bring them safely to the highest peaks.

While Croatia’s natural beauty is adorable, there are quite a few safety risks that make blindly falling in love with it a less innocent game.

First of all, the extreme UV index should never be played down. Without sunscreen, you WILL get burned. All those pale bodies that exit hotels in the morning return like red crabs by night.

The power of nature can be underestimated in the sea, too. Just last week, a Polish tourist with a child stood up on a paddleboard in the town of Omiš. The wind and the current floated them away to the island of Brač.

There are plenty of safety risks in the higher altitudes as well. In the local lore, Biokovo has become known as the mountain that irresponsible tourists try to conquer in flip-flops. Underequipped mountaineers might be the stars of Croatian safety humor, but consequences can be tragic.

So… Admire nature when you can. But just because it looks nice, don’t take its beauty for granted.

Have a safe week,

Ivan Kralj
